Land bordering the sea or other water. On a coastline the strand is usually equivalent to the beach between the waves and the dunes. The Strand in London was so called as it originally ran along one shore of the Thames.

From the noun we also have the verb to strand ‘to drive upon the shore’, ‘to abandon without means of transport’
