A guyot, also known as a tablemount, is an isolated underwater volcanic mountain, with a flat top over 200 metres below the surface of the sea. These features are common in the Pacific Ocean, usually an extinct volcano whose summit did not reach above the sea surface. [A.H.]

Etymology

Named in 1946 for Swiss geographer geologist Arnold Guyot (1807-84).
