Welsh word, often translated as ‘hug’ or ‘safe place’ but with many nuanced uses including ‘cupboard’ and ‘cubby-hole’. In topographical use a cwtch can be a nook – a cozy, sheltered spot, such as might be preferred for a picnic on a windy day.

Pronounced to rhyme with ‘butch’.

Etymology

Possibly from Middle English couche, ‘resting place’ or ‘hiding place’.
