Cornbrash

Local name, originating in Wiltshire, for the coarse, friable, ‘brashy’ sandstone which occurs in various parts of England. This layer of rock was formed in the latter Bathonian stage of the Jurassic era around 166 million years ago and tends to be relatively rich in fossils.

Etymology

The name derives from “brash” (see Brash) for loose rocks and rubble and from the fact that such soils have proven well suited to growing corn
