Thicket of underwood and small trees, especially one managed or previously managed as a coppice, where the main trunks of young trees are felled to encourage side shoots which can then be harvested periodically to provide a running supply of timber.

Etymology

Contractions of ‘coppice’ itself thought to be of latin origin from Mid Latin colpus ‘to strike’, ‘to cut’ (the practice of coppicing may have been introduced or at least developed by the Romans)
